Motor General Claim Advice

What to do when you have an accident
  • If you have been involved in an accident, keep calm and stop the vehicle. Report the incident to the Police if appropriate.
  • If your vehicle has been stolen, report the loss to the Police immediately.
  • If anyone is injured, call for emergency assistance as soon as possible.
  • Do not move any of the involved vehicles until the police has arrived unless you have recorded the details of the situation or help rescue injured persons;
  • If possible record the incident with a camera or make a sketch plan of the accident while the details are fresh in your mind and before the vehicles are moved.
  • Record the information of all other drivers. You should try and obtain the following information: vehicle registration numbers, make and model of vehicles, names, I.D. numbers, driving license numbers (if different from I.D. number), telephone numbers, addresses, names of Insurance Company etc.
  • Record the information of witnesses. Write down names, addresses and phone numbers.
  • Do not discuss or negotiate about who was to blame. Do not promise any payment to other parties. You may jeopardize your insurance by doing so.
  • Give all the details to the police. If the driver has been injured and in the hospital, the police will go to hospital to get accident details;
  • If the driver has not provided any information at the site, he/she has to report to any police station for reference as soon as possible (within 24 hours);
  • Inform your insurance company and broker / agent as soon as possible and they will provide instruction or assistance;
  • Complete claims form and return to your insurance company with a copy of your vehicle registration document, driver's I.D. copy, driving license and the information you have;
  • If you have a comprehensive policy and are claiming for damages to your vehicle, you should submit the estimate of repair costs to your insurance company before you start to repair the vehicle. (Normally your garage will send a copy directly to your insurance company).
  • Pass all Summonses, correspondence in relation to the accident to your insurance company unanswered.
  • File all the information and documents. These may be important if the other party is at fault and you wish to claim the repair costs from their insurer. When you come to renew your insurance, other insurance companies may want to know details about the accident.

Repairing Your Vehicle
  • Do not start to repair your car before the insurance company agrees to pay the cost.
  • Your insurance company may send a loss adjuster to inspect your car before you obtain any necessary repairs, or it may instruct you to obtain a few estimates for the work. Find out from your insurance company what to do about supplemental damage in case the garage discovers some damage caused by the accident but not on the original estimate.
  • An insurance company may repair, reinstate, replace the vehicle or pay in cash the amount of such loss or damage.
  • Insurance Company's indemnity pursuant is usually limited to:
    • the reasonable market value of the Vehicle at the time of its loss or damage; or
    • the Insured's Estimated Value of the vehicle as specified in the Schedule;
    whichever is lesser.
  • You may choose the garage in which you want to fix your vehicle after an accident, unless otherwise stated in the policy. Some companies require policyholders to use the appointed garage. These companies usually offer a premium discount in exchange for your agreement to this provision.
  • Be aware if the Insured Person submits a claim, the normal "No Claim Discount" (NCD) would automatically be forfeited upon renewal of the policy. However, if no third party bodily injury resulted from the accident and concrete evidence can be produced to prove the entire negligence of the third party driver/drivers, you may write to your insurance company to apply for reinstatement of the NCD. Your broker / agent can help you get the discount reinstated.
