  • Geographic Area of Coverage

International medical insurance plans are globally portable and will afford you and your loved ones the protection that you need anywhere in the world. It is important to note, however that when purchasing a policy coverage will generally be offered in one of two areas:
    • Worldwide
    • Worldwide excluding the USA
Choosing a plan with worldwide coverage will allow you to receive elective treatment with any doctor, hospital, or medical facility anywhere in the world. A plan that excludes coverage in the USA (or North America) will not allow you to receive elective treatment there, but will normally still provide coverage for emergency situations.

The reason for these two areas of coverage is that medical and healthcare services in the USA are much more expensive than the rest of the world. As such plans that offer coverage in the USA will have much higher premiums than those that exclude the country from coverage.

If you do not travel to the USA or, are not planning to relocate there on a permanent basis, then choosing a plan that excludes elective coverage there may be a suitable option.

While most policies will provide coverage in one of the two areas captioned above, it is important to note that some insurers will place a premium loading on policies that are obtained in Hong Kong or China due to the high cost of treatment in both those places. In terms of average medical costs Hong Kong ranks as the second most expensive place for healthcare in the world, with costs that are similar to those found in the USA.
