Maternity care is expensive everywhere in the world. Everyone wants the best possible pre and post-natal care available. Having children abroad can bring even greater costs, so having the right maternity coverage is necessary when living overseas. Maternity coverage is an option available with many international insurance plans.

If there are any complications during childbirth or if the child is born with congenital birth defects, the costs of care become even greater. It is important that you have the coverage that you need in the event of anything going wrong.

Maternity coverage typically comes with a waiting period of a minimum of 10 months. This means the policyholder must wait at least 10 months before making any maternity related claims. The waiting periods for maternity vary among insurance companies, but there is always a waiting period of some duration.

A maternity plan will also typically provide coverage for your child after it is born. Newborn child coverage will usually be offered in one of two ways: the child is either 'Born into the Plan' or they receive a 'Free Benefit'.

A 'Born into the Plan' benefit will allow the child to be born into the mother's insurance plan and will be guaranteed coverage for life even if the child should suffer from a serious health problem. Having a child born into a plan will raise the annual premium.

A 'Free Benefit' provides coverage for a predetermined financial limit or time period without affecting the annual premium. At the end of the 'Free Benefit' period, the parents may apply for on-going coverage. There is no guaranteed continuing coverage with a free benefit and if the insurer decides to continue coverage after the application has been made there will be an increase in the premium.

Maternity benefits usually cover the following:
    • Normal delivery
    • Pre and postnatal treatment
    • Medically prescribed Caesarean
    • Complicated delivery
    • Home delivery
    • Home nursing in conjunction with home delivery
Having a child in Hong Kong or China can be extremely expensive. The cost of healthcare in Hong Kong is continuing to rise rapidly and as more people seek a higher quality of medical treatment, especially when having a child, the availability of services becomes increasingly limited forcing the average costs up. The best way to ensure your safety and protect the health of your child in Hong Kong is with a quality international medical insurance plan with a maternity benefit.
