Waiting Periods
A waiting period is the total amount of time from the start of an international health insurance plan where the policyholder is not allowed to claim for treatment associated with a specific plan benefit. Insurance companies use waiting periods to prevent policyholder's from making large claims having only been on a policy for a short period of time.
Waiting periods are most commonly used in conjunction with dental, maternity, and psychiatric benefits, and will typically appear on most international health insurance policies. The length of a waiting period will vary between insurance companies, however a maternity waiting period is usually 10 - 12 months, while dental and psychiatric benefits can be obtained with waiting periods of 6 months to 2 years.
It is important that you are aware of any waiting periods that may be applicable to your plan. When choosing an international health insurance plan, you should take into account if any waiting periods apply to your desired benefits and how long those waiting periods might be.
