FAQs
What is Deductible/Excess?
'Deductible', also known as 'excess', is a pre-set amount in an insurance policy that the policyholder is required to pay to the insurer when a claim is made. For example, if the total amount of a claim is HKD $8,000, and the policy has an excess of HKD $2,000, the policyholder will then have to pay the deductible of HKD $2,000, and the remaining HKD 8,000 of the claim will be paid by the insurer.
What factors affect motor insurance prices?
Two main aspects influence motor insurance prices, including but not limited to:
- Driver's Profile: Age, driving experience, occupation, NCD, driving violations and past insurance records, etc.
- Insured Vehicle: Manufacturer, model, vehicle age, type of coverage (third-party or comprehensive), horsepower, etc.
What is the difference between comprehensive car insurance and third-party insurance?
Third-party insured individuals can add extra coverage items for a small additional premium, including:
- 24-Hour Driver Support Coverage: Emergency roadside assistance, towing service, rental car costs during vehicle damage, and personal accident coverage for the insured and passengers of up to $270,000.
- Windshield Protection Coverage: Given the prevalence of highways and heavy vehicles in Hong Kong, windshields are more prone to damage from stones. Windshield protection compensates for damage to the insured vehicle's windshield due to accidents, with coverage of up to $3,000 per accident, and no deductible!
Does a suspended license count toward driving experience?
Yes. Insurance companies generally consider the full duration since a license was first issued as driving experience, even if the license was suspended at some point.
While insurers can't rely solely on license duration to confirm actual driving history (e.g., borrowing a friend's car or renting occasionally), they assume that from the day a license is issued, the holder has driving experience. Therefore, a suspended license still counts toward your overall driving experience.
How is No-Claim Discount (NCD/NCB) calculated for private cars and motorcycles?
| Year | Private Cars/Taxis |
Motorcycles/ Commercial Vehicles
|
| 1st (First Purchase) | 0% | 0% |
| 2nd | 20% | 10% |
| 3rd | 30% | 20% |
| 4th | 40% | 30% (maximum) |
| 5th | 50% | 30% (maximum) |
| 6th | 60% (maximum) | 30% (maximum) |
Note: No-Claim Discounts cannot be shared or transferred between different vehicle policy groups.
If the premiums are so low, will I still receive a claim payout after an accident?
Yes. The likelihood of receiving a claim payout is not directly tied to the premium amount. What matters is whether the policy is valid and the claim meets the insurer's terms.
If you have concerns about the authenticity of your policy, you can always consult the underwriting insurance company or the relevant regulatory authorities.
At Kwiksure, we've built a solid reputation over 20+ years in Hong Kong's motor insurance industry. With a 10,000+ sq. ft. office in East Kowloon, we operate with transparency and integrity—clearly disclosing important clauses (like "coverage only for named drivers") before you purchase.
Are there any special restrictions when buying car insurance for a P-plate driver?
Besides the usual P-plate restrictions, car insurance often has an “inexperienced driver” excess for drivers with less than two years of driving experience. P-plate drivers should check this excess, not just the premium.
They should also make sure they are listed on the policy, as failing to do so may breach the principle of utmost good faith and could lead to a denied claim.
