Electric vehicle (EV) charging is always a major concern for EV owners. Although Hong Kong already has over 7,400 charging points, as of the end of January 2024, there are 79,580 EVs in the city. This means about ten cars are competing for one charging point, highlighting that the number of charging points still lags far behind the increase in EVs. Besides Tesla’s own supercharger stations, more charging stations are being set up to support various EV brands.

This Kwiksure guide presents 13 recommended universal paid charging station locations, a comparison of charging fees, and an explanation of EV charging standards to help EV owners better understand the charging process.

  • Charging sessions stop abruptly, affecting the planned budget.

Charging Point Distribution Discrepancies

As of December 2023, Hong Kong has 7,415 public charging points, including 4,225 medium-speed and 1,151 fast charging points. With medium-speed charging taking several hours and slow charging up to ten hours, over 2,000 slow charging points are underutilized, exacerbating the shortage of charging points.

To address this, the government has completed feasibility studies to convert vacant oil station sites in East Kowloon and New Territories East into fast-charging stations. The Kowloon East site, near Megabox, will offer at least 18 charging points with a minimum output power of 100 kW, with 10 designated for taxis and minibuses between 3 am and 6 am daily.

EV Charging Speed | DC vs. AC Charging Points

The Environmental Protection Department classifies Hong Kong's EV charging stations into three categories based on output power:

  • Standard Speed (up to 2.8 kW)
  • Medium Speed (2.8 kW – 20 kW)
  • Fast Speed (above 20 kW)

Connectors in Hong Kong include CSS2CHAdeMOType 2, and 13A, with Type 2 being the most common. Charging methods are DC (Direct Current) and AC (Alternating Current). DC charging refers to fast charging, while AC charging is used for medium and slow charging.

Compared to AC charging, DC charging (European and North American standards) has two large contact pins, making the plug larger. Generally, fast charging from 20% to 80% takes about 30 minutes; medium-speed charging takes about 6-7 hours, and slow charging takes at least 9 hours.

EV Charging Standards in Hong Kong

European Standard

The European Standard is most commonly seen in Hong Kong, including AC Type 2 and DC CCS2 (Combined Charging System 2). CCS2 is Type 2 with two additional DC pins, used for both DC fast charging and AC charging.

Japanese Standard

CHAdeMO is mostly used by Japanese EV brands, supporting up to 50 kW DC charging. For medium and slow AC charging, Type 1 (J1772) is used.

North American Standard

For AC charging, Type 1 (J1772) is used, while DC charging uses CCS1, similar to CCS2 but with Type 1 and DC pins.

Chinese Standard

GB/T is the standard in China, with AC charging currents of 16A, 32A, 25A and DC charging at 400A. The AC plug is similar to European Type 2, used only by domestic EVs.
