What is PHEV Hybrid? What are its features?

The full name of PHEV is Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, which sits between the traditional "hybrid electric vehicle (HEV)" and the "pure electric vehicle (BEV / EV, Battery Electric Vehicle)". Therefore, a PHEV possesses both a gasoline engine and an electric motor. Its greatest feature is that it can extend the vehicle's driving range through either gasoline or electrical charging.

In the past, what we commonly referred to as hybrid cars—especially those from Japanese brands—mostly belonged to the HEV category. Although they also feature a gasoline engine and a motor, the primary power comes from the engine, with the motor only playing a supporting role, resulting in a battery capacity of just 1-2 kWh. In contrast, PHEVs place a stronger emphasis on the power output of the motor, generally featuring a battery capacity of 10-25 kWh, which allows them to drive around 40km to 80km on pure electric power. If the battery runs low, the gasoline engine drives a generator to charge the battery, or it can be plugged into an external power source for charging just like a pure electric vehicle. Consequently, PHEVs not only provide excellent fuel economy, but their driving range is also greater than that of pure electric vehicles.

BYD SEALION 6 DM-i

The body size of the SEALION 6 DM-i is slightly smaller than that of the same manufacturer's pure electric SEALION 7, but it also belongs to the mid-size SUV category, catering to the vehicle needs of Hong Kong users. It is equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine that outputs 72 kW of horsepower and 122 Nm of torque. Combined with the electric motor's 145 kW of horsepower and 300 Nm of torque, the power is absolutely sufficient to handle Hong Kong's road environments.

The SEALION 6 DM-i features a total of four power output modes, including a pure electric mode for urban use. When the battery runs low, it switches to a series mode, where the engine drives a generator to supply electricity to the motor while simultaneously recovering excess power back into the battery. The parallel mode is used during moments that require instantaneous power output, such as overtaking or driving uphill. Finally, there is a direct-drive mode for long-distance cruising, where the engine fully outputs power. By utilizing different driving environments, it achieves a fuel consumption rate of 5.5L / 100km.

Which Hybrid Electric Vehicle Suits You?

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

Whether or not you have charging equipment at home or at the office, a PHEV is a very excellent choice. First of all, even without charging and relying purely on gasoline, you can already enjoy the driving dynamics of an electric vehicle without having to worry about insufficient range. Of course, when paired with electrical charging, the full power of a PHEV can be unleashed. This is especially true if you only drive for daily commuting, where pure electric driving is already sufficient for use, achieving near-zero fuel consumption and drastically reducing driving costs.

Traditional Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)

HEV technology has been developing for many years and commands a high resale value in the market. Especially when driving frequently in urban areas or facing traffic jams, HEVs are driven by the motor at low speeds, which directly benefits fuel-saving performance. Furthermore, HEVs do not require charging. For drivers who want to avoid range anxiety and prefer a traditional driving feel, there is no need to deliberately change driving habits or run around searching for charging stations, yet a significant amount of fuel costs can still be saved.

Pure Electric Vehicle (BEV / EV)

Although Hong Kong's pure electric vehicle market is already highly mature and charging stations are always just around the corner, range anxiety remains a difficult psychological hurdle to overcome for high-mileage drivers. However, if you are not a high-mileage user and can frequently spare time to visit charging stations, or if you have charging equipment installed at home, a pure electric vehicle is absolutely suitable for you: a snappy driving experience, a cabin free of vibrations and engine noise, along with an abundance of safety systems and low-cost maintenance are the strongest selling points of pure electric cars.

Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV)

Since the battery of an MHEV is used to assist with starting off or making the start-stop process smoother and more seamless, it achieves a fuel-saving effect. Although the fuel-saving effect of an MHEV is not the most outstanding compared to other hybrid models, it differs very little from a traditional gasoline vehicle in terms of operation. The driving feel is 99% identical to a pure gasoline car, making it suitable for drivers who love a traditional driving sensation.

PHEV Daily Maintenance

Because a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle) features an engine, a battery, and a motor, it often gives people the impression that "maintenance is both difficult and expensive." Is this actually the case? In fact, PHEV maintenance can be mainly categorized into three major areas: the "gasoline system," the "electrical system," and "consumable parts."

Gasoline System

The gasoline system refers to the engine component. Its maintenance routine is identical to that of a traditional gasoline vehicle, including regular replacement of engine oil, oil filters, spark plugs, and cabin air filters. However, because PHEVs mostly operate in pure electric mode when driving in urban areas, the engine's operating time is substantially reduced. For example, if a vehicle has traveled 10,000 kilometers, perhaps only 3,000 kilometers were driven by the engine. Therefore, the mechanical wear and tear inside the engine will be much slower than that of a traditional gasoline car. However, it is important to note that even if you charge daily and rarely drive using the engine, the manufacturer will still require regular engine oil changes (e.g., every 1 year or 10,000 kilometers) because engine oil will oxidize, absorb moisture, and degrade if left unused inside the engine for too long.

Electrical System

The vast majority of electric motors can be considered maintenance-free. For the battery component, users need to pay attention to their charging habits—for instance, avoid frequently charging only when the battery is too low, and do not leave the vehicle parked with a full charge for extended periods, so that the battery life does not degrade significantly. Conversely, the dedicated battery coolant is what users need to pay attention to. To cool down the battery, a PHEV features an independent battery coolant system, which typically needs to be replaced every 3 to 5 years or at specific mileages to ensure the battery can dissipate heat normally.

Consumable Parts

For traditional gasoline vehicles, the braking system is one of the highly consumed parts. For a PHEV, however, the kinetic energy recovery system intervenes during braking to achieve a deceleration effect, so the amount of time the driver needs to "step on the brakes" is drastically reduced. The lifespan of brake pads and brake discs is much longer than that of gasoline vehicles, generally lasting up to 2 to 3 times longer. For example, if a gasoline car previously required brake pad replacements every 20,000 kilometers, a PHEV can go 40,000 to 60,000 kilometers before replacement. That being said, do not forget to inspect the brake pads regularly.

PHEV Driving Precautions

Do Not Ignoring Gasoline for Long Periods

If the pure electric driving range of your PHEV is already enough for your daily use, to the point where you do not even need to refuel for several consecutive months, it is still recommended to start the engine at least once a month. In addition to letting the engine oil circulate to keep the engine running smoothly, the gasoline in the fuel tank can also degrade due to prolonged storage.

Pay Attention to the Battery Charge Level

The lithium battery of a PHEV is most vulnerable when left at 0% or 100% for extended periods. Especially if the vehicle needs to be parked and left unused for a long time, it is best to keep the battery level between 30% and 80%. Additionally, make good use of the battery preservation function (Save mode) inside the vehicle, and avoid frequently draining the battery completely before charging.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a PHEV plug-in hybrid vehicle and a traditional hybrid vehicle?

The full name of PHEV is Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. A PHEV possesses both a gasoline engine and an electric motor, and its greatest feature is that it can extend the vehicle's driving range through either gasoline or electrical charging. In the past, Japanese brand hybrid cars in Hong Kong mostly belonged to the HEV category. Although they also feature a gasoline engine and a motor, the primary power comes from the engine, with the motor only playing a supporting role and having a smaller battery capacity. In contrast, PHEVs generally feature a battery capacity of 10-25 kWh, allowing them to drive around 40km to 80km on pure electric power.

Is repair and maintenance difficult for a PHEV plug-in hybrid vehicle?

PHEV maintenance is very straightforward. Aside from the gasoline system of a regular gasoline vehicle—which requires regular replacement of engine oil, oil filters, spark plugs, and cabin air filters—the electrical system requires regular checks to ensure the dedicated battery coolant is sufficient. Finally, regarding consumable parts such as brake pads, the lifespan of the brake pads is much more durable than that of gasoline vehicles due to the assistance of energy recovery, though regular inspections are still necessary.
