Tesla Superchargers and Wall Connectors

Tesla offers two main charger types: Superchargers and Wall Connectors. Superchargers are typically ground-mounted and offer high-powered charging up to 250 kW, capable of charging a vehicle from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes. Wall Connectors are usually wall-mounted and provide charging power between 11 and 16 kW. Pricing differs between these two charger types, as detailed below.

New Tesla Charging Station Locations in Hong Kong Island and New Territories

Tesla is progressively opening its charging stations to non-Tesla EVs. Currently, stations in Hong Kong Island (Lee Gardens, Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan, and The Westwood in Sai Wan) and the New Territories (Sha Tin, Ma On Shan, Yuen Long, Fanling, and Tuen Mun) are participating. Tesla has yet to announce the opening dates for Kowloon locations.

How to Charge a Non-Tesla EV at a Tesla Station

Using the Tesla app, locating and using a Tesla charging station is straightforward:

Open the Tesla app and tap "Find Charger." Locate available Superchargers open to non-Tesla EVs on the map.
Select your desired station. The app will display the number of available stalls and the charging rates. Tap "Charge Here."
Choose a stall number and add a payment method. Enter your credit card information and tap "Start Charging."
Plug in the charging cable to begin charging.

Tesla Charging Station Pricing: Higher Costs in Hong Kong Island

Tesla charging is priced per kWh. Rates in Hong Kong Island are generally higher than in Kowloon and the New Territories. It's important to note that non-Tesla EVs are charged approximately 30% more than Tesla owners. While potentially more expensive, Tesla Superchargers offer a convenient charging option for emergency situations.

Recently, Wall Connectors, previously free for Tesla owners, have started to show charging fees in the app. However, some Tesla owners reported not being charged despite the app indicating a fee. This requires further clarification.

Important Considerations When Using Tesla Superchargers: Avoid Idle Fees

Idle Fees: All Tesla Superchargers have idle fees. When the station is below 100% occupancy, the idle fee is $4 HKD per minute. When the station is at 100% occupancy, the idle fee increases to $8 HKD per minute.
Connector Type: Tesla uses the CCS charging standard. If a Supercharger stall has two cables or an adapter installed, other EVs can only charge using the CCS connector.
Charging Incompatibility: The layout of some Tesla Supercharger stations may not accommodate all vehicles. If the charging cable cannot connect properly, do not occupy the stall and prevent other vehicles from charging.
