【Tesla Model Y L Full Buying Guide】In-Depth Review of the Six-Seat Tesla Model Y L｜Comparison with the Five-Seat Version

With the end of the "One-for-One" EV tax incentive, the post-tax price of the Model Y L has surged to nearly HKD 500,000. However, since the standard Model Y’s price has also increased, the Model Y L still comes out ahead in seating capacity, range, performance, and charging efficiency — costing only about HKD 20,000 more than the Long Range all-wheel-drive version. For buyers with sufficient budget, the Model Y L is the recommended choice. But if you’re simply looking for spacious SUV practicality, the rear-wheel-drive Model Y will be more than adequate. 

The Model Y L is longer and taller than the Model Y, with the most significant increase in length being 179 mm. Compared to the Model X's 5057 mm length, the Model Y L's shorter body is more suitable for driving and parking in Hong Kong's road conditions. Furthermore, the Model Y L's wheelbase reaches 3040 mm, which is not only 150 mm longer than the Model Y but also 75 mm longer than the Model X. However...pay attention to The Model Y L has a ground clearance of 169 mm, which is about 30 mm higher than the Model Y.If there are elderly people or children, getting on and off the bus may be inconvenient.

Like the Model Y, the Model Y L offers six exterior color options, with Mystic Grey being the default free color. Only 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels are available. Interior colors are all-black and light grey, both free options. The Model Y L comes standard with Autopilot, and customers can choose either "Upgraded Autopilot" (HK$27,000) or "Full Self-Driving" (HK$54,000). However, since Full Self-Driving is not yet fully available in Hong Kong, the "Full Self-Driving" option only offers partial functionality; this should be noted when purchasing.

The Model Y L is currently only available in a six-seat version. Although it only has one more seat than the Model Y, its 2+2+2 layout provides ample legroom for each passenger.The first row now features power leg support and adjustable headrests, with ventilation and heating functions. The second row has two individual seats, also with ventilation and heating functions.It is equipped with electric handrails for easy passenger access.

The third-row seats feature heating and adjustable backrest angles, along with independent air conditioning vents that passengers can operate manually. The trunk has a button to electrically fold down the second and third-row seats, creating over 2,500 liters of space, a significant increase of approximately 18% compared to the Model Y's 2,138 liters of cargo space. 

Inside the cabin, the Model Y L continues Tesla’s signature minimalist design, featuring a 16-inch central touchscreen and an 8-inch rear touchscreen. The entertainment system matches those of other current Tesla models, allowing occupants to watch YouTube, Netflix, or play video games while the vehicle is parked. Notably, it comes equipped with an upgraded 18-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, and debuts Tesla’s new Immersive Sound X technology.

Compared with the previous Immersive Sound system, Immersive Sound X can analyze audio content in real time, detect vocals and key instruments, and position them precisely within the soundstage. Ambient background sounds, accompaniments, and echoes are distributed to the sides and rear, creating a more three-dimensional and immersive listening experience. 

As is typical of Tesla, they haven't officially announced the battery capacity, but from Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of ChinaPublicly available data shows that the Model Y L uses an 82 kWh battery, providing a range of 681 km under the WLTP standard. A 15-minute charge adds 288 km of range, making it more efficient than the Model Y in both range and charging. In terms of performance, the Model Y L accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, significantly outperforming the Model Y's 5.9 seconds (rear-wheel drive version) and 4.8 seconds (long-range all-wheel drive version).

The Model Y L is also equipped with an active suspension system and electronic dampers that continuously monitor road conditions and automatically adjust damping resistance to reduce the bumpy feeling caused by small vibrations.

Regarding tires, they also differ from the Model Y. Although both use 19-inch wheels (the Model Y L does not offer tire options),The Model Y L not only features redesigned wheels, but also boasts a configuration with 255mm wide front wheels and 275mm wide rear wheels.Unlike the Model Y, which has the same 255mm width front and rear, the rear seats offer a more stable ride with the "Balance" or "Rear Comfort" handling settings.

Tesla provides a 4-year or 80,000-kilometer factory warranty for the Model Y L from the date of vehicle registration, while the battery and drive unit are covered by an 8-year or 192,000-kilometer warranty (8 years or 160,000 kilometers for the rear-wheel drive Model Y).

Tesla does not require owners to return their vehicles for regular inspections; if a problem arises, an appointment can be made at a service center.

Reasons for choosing Model Y L

• With the wheelbase extended to 3,040 mm and a 2+2+2 six-seat layout, the independent seats in the second row are not only more comfortable, but also make it easier for passengers to get in and out of the third row without having to awkwardly fold the seats.

• The second-row individual seats offer power adjustment, ventilation, and heating, and are equipped with power armrests. If you frequently need to pick up or drop off elderly relatives or VIPs, the Model Y L provides a level of prestige close to that of an MPV.

• Equipped with an active suspension system, electronic shock absorbers, and double-layered soundproof glass, the ride is smoother and quieter than the standard Model Y, addressing the previous criticism of the Model Y's overly stiff suspension.

Reasons for choosing Model Y

• With its shorter body length and smaller turning radius, it is easier to park or make a U-turn in Hong Kong's narrow indoor parking lots.

• With a lower price, insurance premiums and deductibles are generally more affordable than the "luxury/long wheelbase" Model Y L.

• The rear seat space is more than enough for two adults or two child safety seats, so there is no need to pay extra for the third row of space that is not used and increase the energy consumption.

• The handling response is more direct than the long-wheelbase version. If you prefer a firm driving style with a strong sense of road feel, the five-seater version will be more suitable.
