1. Stay calm, turn off the engine and turn on the shutdown light.
2. Call the traffic accident emergency hotline 122 (if it happens on a highway, you can call the national highway emergency rescue hotline: 12122), and notify the insurance company.
3. Take photos of the damage to the vehicle and the scene in a safe manner and keep them as evidence. The vehicle was then moved to a safe location under safe conditions. If you leave your vehicle at the scene, causing traffic congestion, the traffic police may issue a ticket to the driver and fine him ¥200.
4. When the Mainland traffic police arrive at the scene, they will handle the case using simplified procedures in accordance with the "Regulations on the Procedures for Handling Road Traffic Accidents" and produce a Road Traffic Accident Identification Certificate on the spot.
5. In addition to listing basic information such as the course of the accident and evidence of the accident, the most important thing on the accident report is to determine the accident responsibility of the traffic accident, which is divided into full responsibility, primary responsibility, equal responsibility and secondary responsibility. The losses borne by different responsibilities are divided into 100%, 70-90%, 50% and 10-30%. Both parties involved must follow the responsibilities specified in the accident identification report (if they disagree with the determination of responsibilities, they may submit a written review application within 3 days).
6. Contact the insurance company and follow the instructions of the insurance company staff to handle subsequent matters, such as towing or repairs.

3. Do not move the vehicle and evacuate all passengers to a safe location if it is safe to do so.
4. When the Mainland traffic police arrive at the scene, they will investigate, inspect and collect evidence (and detain the accident vehicle if necessary).
Step 5: Follow the instructions of the police and insurance company personnel to carry out follow-up processing.

If a traffic accident occurs that does not involve a third party, such as crashing into a building or public facility, you should immediately turn on the deadlight and take photos of the damage to the car body and the scene in a safe manner to keep as evidence. If it is safe to do so, the vehicle will be moved to a safe location, and the traffic accident alarm number 122 will be called to report the accident and the insurance company will be notified. When the police arrive at the scene, they will handle the case using simplified procedures in accordance with the "Regulations on the Procedures for Handling Road Traffic Accidents" and prepare a road traffic accident certificate on the spot. The driver should then contact the insurance company to discuss the liability and compensation issues stipulated in the certificate.
Do not settle a car accident privately in the Mainland
If you collide with another vehicle in the Mainland, it is not recommended to settle the matter privately with the other party to avoid the other party going back on their word and making a large claim for compensation. Although according to the Mainland's "Regulations on the Procedures for Handling Road Traffic Accidents", the parties can resolve the matter through negotiation, for Hong Kong people who are not familiar with Mainland laws and regulations, we still recommend calling the police and notifying the insurance company to handle the matter. The insurance company will pay compensation based on the actual loss, depending on the type of insurance and the insured amount. Therefore, if you purchase commercial insurance with a larger coverage, the insurance company can provide more comprehensive services, such as sending personnel to assist the car owner and even helping to arrange a lawyer.
Car accident in mainland China, can the insurance company help?
In the event of a traffic accident in the Mainland, insurance agencies will assist in handling matters such as compensation, which is particularly important for Hong Kong people who are not familiar with the handling of traffic accidents in the Mainland. Therefore, if you plan to purchase mainland insurance for your vehicle, you should not only focus on the premium and policy content, but also pay attention to its experience and network coverage to ensure that you can get immediate support in the event of an accident. The insurance company will send personnel to the accident scene to assist the driver and instruct the driver on how to handle subsequent matters.
Currently, the insurance requirement for Hong Kong cars traveling north is to purchase "equivalence first recognition" insurance or compulsory traffic insurance (i.e. "motor vehicle traffic accident liability compulsory insurance"). However, the Hong Kong Consumer Council reminds policyholders that if they purchase a "Recognition of Equivalency" policy through a Hong Kong insurance company, they must purchase a "Recognition of Equivalency" policy equivalent to the "Compulsory Traffic Insurance" from the same insurance company as their existing motor vehicle insurance policy. If a traffic accident unfortunately occurs in the Mainland, the relevant claims will be handled by the Mainland branch of a Hong Kong insurance company, a Mainland partner insurance company or a Mainland claims service agency.
Although compulsory traffic insurance covers third-party personal injury and property damage, the compensation amount is RMB 180,000, and the property damage compensation is only RMB 2,000, which may not be enough to pay the full accident compensation. At the same time, compulsory traffic insurance does not cover the driver and passengers in the car. Therefore, we also recommend purchasing "commercial insurance" (i.e. "Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Cross-Border Vehicle Commercial Insurance"), adding an additional RMB 1 million or even RMB 2 million on top of the RMB 180,000 insured amount, which is equivalent to Hong Kong's third-party insurance.
