First, consider the main purpose of purchasing the motorcycle: is it for daily commuting, leisure, or commercial use such as delivery services? Different uses directly affect the choice of bike type.

At the same time, budget is an important consideration. Besides the bike price, you should reserve funds for regular maintenance, insurance fees, and other expenses. Generally, it is recommended to reserve about 20-30% of the bike price for other expenses.

Additionally, beginners should be aware of legal requirements when riding motorcycles. For example, drivers holding a Probationary Driving License (P license) must comply with additional restrictions, such as not carrying passengers. Violating these restrictions may affect insurance terms and coverage.

For first-time motorcycle buyers, the most confusing part is often the choice of bike type. Motorcycles on the market can be roughly divided into three main types, each with unique characteristics and suitable scenarios. Naked Bikes and Scooters are ideal choices for beginners, featuring comfortable seating that does not require excessive leaning forward or backward, allowing riders to control the bike in the most natural posture. Due to their simple and intuitive handling and relatively affordable prices, they are suitable for daily commuting.

Sports motorcycles are an advanced choice. Although their streamlined appearance is eye-catching, they require more riding experience to fully master. Moreover, sports bikes adopt a forward-leaning riding posture, which may be more strenuous for beginners, and maintenance costs are generally higher. Therefore, it is recommended to consider sports motorcycles only after gaining sufficient riding experience.

Cruiser motorcycles prioritize comfort, equipped with larger windshields and wider seats, suitable for long-distance riding. Additionally, touring motorcycles generally have ample storage space and come with multiple safety features such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). However, due to their larger size, beginners need more time to adapt to their handling characteristics.

For beginners, motorcycles equipped with comprehensive safety features are very important. When purchasing, the primary consideration should be basic safety configurations such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), TCS (Traction Control System), front wheel lift control system, and quick-shift system. Below is a brief explanation of these safety systems.

• ABS (Anti-lock Braking System): Effectively prevents wheel lock-up during emergency braking, greatly reducing the risk of skidding.

• TCS (Traction Control System): Similar to ABS, it prevents tire slippage but mainly works during starting, acceleration, and cornering, whereas ABS mainly works during braking.

• Front Wheel Lift Control System: Limits the motorcycle’s power output temporarily to prevent the front wheel from lifting unexpectedly, which affects grip and control.

• Quick Shifter System: Allows gear shifting without using the clutch, reducing the jerking sensation during shifting and simplifying overall operation.

The two-wheel design of motorcycles also requires ergonomic considerations. The basic requirement is that when the motorcycle stops, the rider should be able to easily touch the ground with one foot to ensure stability when parked, which also helps quick reactions in emergencies. Additionally, details such as the distance between the handlebar and seat, and seat height should match the rider’s body shape, providing comfort and stable control.

In Hong Kong, motorcycle insurance mainly falls into three types: Third Party Only Insurance (TPO), Third Party Fire and Theft Insurance (TPFT), and Comprehensive Insurance (COMP). As a beginner, it is important to understand the coverage and limitations of each type.

• Third Party Only Insurance (TPO) - The legally required minimum coverage, compensating for injury or death to third parties or damage to their property caused by accidents. Note that the property damage coverage for motorcycles is usually lower than that for private cars, generally up to HKD 1 million or less.

• Third Party Fire and Theft Insurance (TPFT) - In addition to basic coverage, it includes protection against losses caused by fire or theft. Comprehensive insurance offers the most extensive coverage, including accidental damage to your own vehicle.

• Comprehensive Insurance (COMP) - More extensive than third party or fire and theft insurance, it covers third party property damage and bodily injury as well as damage and loss to your own motorcycle after an accident.

For beginners holding a P license, insurance companies usually charge higher premiums due to the higher accident risk. Notably, the maximum No Claim Discount (NCD) for motorcycles is only 30%, significantly lower than the 60% limit for private cars. Also, P license holders must strictly comply with the no-passenger rule; otherwise, insurance may become invalid in case of an accident.

Whether buying a brand-new or second-hand motorcycle, we recommend test-riding first. For new bikes, you can feel the handling; for second-hand motorcycles, test mechanical performance such as brake sensitivity, engine smoothness, and steering control. Also, inquire about maintenance schedules and estimated costs to budget for future expenses.

Regarding insurance, pay special attention to policy terms about modified parts. Generally, as long as modifications comply with Transport Department regulations, insurance remains valid. However, any unreported modifications may void insurance. It is advisable to consult your insurer before modifying your bike.

Additionally, regular maintenance is key to ensuring riding safety. Choose bike models with lower maintenance requirements to save costs and reduce breakdown risks. For second-hand bikes, carefully check maintenance records, especially for important parts like tires and brakes.
