When was GAC AION established?
If you frequently travel to the Mainland or follow the Mainland automotive market, you are likely no stranger to "GAC." Established in 1997, GAC Group has joint ventures with local favorites Toyota and Honda, selling brands like GAC Toyota and GAC Honda in the Mainland over the years, making it a true "national car" in the Mainland market. In 2008, GAC established its own brand, GAC Trumpchi, focusing primarily on gasoline and hybrid models. GAC AION was subsequently established in 2017, aiming to deliver high-cost-performance and highly practical electric vehicles.

The AION ES, which once captured headlines with a striking price tag of just over HK$130,000, not only successfully generated buzz but also significantly raised GAC AION's brand awareness among Hong Kong residents. Even though the electric vehicle tax concession incentives have now expired, its retail price remains exceptionally competitive, allowing buyers to drive it home for just HK$189,800.

Featuring a traditional four-door sedan silhouette, the AION ES is equipped with a 55.2 kWh battery and a single-motor, front-wheel-drive layout, delivering 100 kW of power and 225 Nm of torque alongside a driving range of approximately 442 km under the NEDC standard. Although the AION ES uses its budget-friendly price point as its primary attraction, its equipment list remains remarkably comprehensive, featuring LED headlights, an 8-inch central touchscreen, touch-controlled dual-zone climate control, rear air vents, a 12V power outlet, and four USB charging ports.

When will the AION N60 / i60 arrive in Hong Kong?
GAC AION recently unveiled its brand-new N60 and i60 models in the Mainland, which are widely regarded as the successors to the Y Plus and V respectively. Although there is currently no official news regarding their arrival dates in Hong Kong, these models are undoubtedly highly anticipated by local drivers. Let's take a sneak peek at what the AION N60 and i60 have to offer.
AION N60

Visually, the most striking difference between the AION N60 and the Y Plus lies in the headlights. The N60 adopts a full-width front light strip dubbed the "Quantum Star Ring Headlights" by the manufacturer, and the wheel arches have been updated to match the body color. To comply with new regulations in the Mainland, the N60 ditches hidden door handles in favor of a traditional layout. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle has grown across the board, measuring 4,615 mm in length, 1,883 mm in width, and 1,673 mm in height. Its wheelbase has expanded by 25 mm over the Y Plus to reach 2,775 mm, providing an interior cabin height of 1.2 m alongside a massive 2.38-square-meter panoramic sunroof with an electric sunshade.
On the hardware front, the N60 benefits from several major upgrades. It comes equipped with Magazine Battery 2.0 technology and an amorphous alloy electric drive system, achieving an energy consumption rate of just 11.7 kWh per 100 km and a CLTC-rated driving range of up to 610 km. A front MacPherson and rear five-link suspension setup is utilized to enhance ride comfort. Most notably, the entire lineup comes standard with LiDAR, offering exceptional cost-performance considering its Mainland price range of approximately RMB 110,000 to RMB 130,000. Even more groundbreaking are rumors that the N60 supports battery-swapping functionality; while it remains uncertain whether this feature will be usable in Hong Kong, it is an exceptionally rare inclusion at this price point.
AION i60

The AION i60 is slightly larger than the N60, with body dimensions of 4,685 x 1,845 x 1,660 mm, though it shares the same 2,775 mm wheelbase. The i60 will be available in a pure electric version as well as a first-ever range-extended (EREV) version. The pure electric variant offers driving ranges of 530 km and 650 km under the CLTC standard. Meanwhile, the range-extended version pairs a 29.165 kWh battery with a 1.5-liter engine to achieve a combined comprehensive range of 1,240 km. Given that Hong Kong's electric vehicle tax concessions have expired, this range-extended hybrid option may prove highly attractive to local buyers.
In terms of performance, the i60 delivers power outputs of 150 kW and 165 kW, with torque figures of 205 Nm and 240 Nm. The equipment list leaves nothing to be desired, featuring ventilated and heated power front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power tailgate, alongside rear seats that can recline up to a generous 137 degrees. Pricing for both the pure electric and range-extended versions starts from RMB 110,000 in the Mainland, representing another highly competitive value proposition.
Key Features of GAC AION Electric Vehicles
Equipped with "Magazine Batteries"
The entire GAC AION electric vehicle lineup utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, internally branded as "Magazine Batteries." These batteries undergo rigorous safety assessments and can withstand extreme temperatures of 1,400°C or higher. Now in its second generation (Magazine Battery 2.0), the system is not only highly heat-resistant and self-extinguishment capable, but has also passed military-grade puncture and gunshot testing to bolster owner confidence.
Exceptionally Spacious Cabins
GAC AION models are renowned for their "short overhangs, long wheelbase" spatial design philosophy. Whether it is the AION Y Plus, AION UT, or AION V, both the rear passenger legroom and cargo capacities are remarkably generous. Complemented by a completely flat floor design, the vehicles offer a highly comfortable ride quality. Furthermore, because the overall vehicle lengths remain moderate, they are highly practical for navigating and parking in Hong Kong's notoriously tight car parks.
Comprehensive Standard Equipment
GAC AION breaks traditional automotive industry conventions by offering largely identical equipment levels across different trim variants, ensuring even standard models come packed with diverse features. Taking the UT as an example, the front seats feature not only electronic adjustment but also ventilation functions. Other everyday practicalities, such as an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rear passenger air vents, wireless smartphone charging, and Apple CarPlay support, are fully integrated to meet owners' actual needs.
Diverse Lineup of Vehicle Models
The models introduced by GAC AION to the Hong Kong market precisely target the distinct needs of local drivers. This includes the space-optimized AION Y Plus and AION V; the light, nimble, and urban-friendly AION UT; the budget-conscious AION ES designed for drivers with a set price ceiling; and, of course, the premium SUV format highly favored by Hong Kong motorists—the HYPTEC HT.
Which GAC AION is Best for You?
For Novice Drivers / Budget-Conscious Buyers: AION UT / AION ES
Both the AION UT and AION ES represent exceptionally high cost-performance models within the AION lineup. In addition to their highly accessible pricing, the former boasts a rich array of standard equipment and practical spatial design, while the latter offers a traditional three-box sedan silhouette—making both variants rare contenders within their respective price brackets.
For Families: AION Y Plus / AION V
If your primary requirement is outstanding cabin space, the AION Y Plus and AION V are undoubtedly the top choices. Not only do they feature remarkably generous rear legroom, but their doors can also open up to a wide angle of nearly 90 degrees, making it exceptionally convenient to install and access child safety seats.
The Luxury Choice: HYPTEC HT
Featuring striking gull-wing doors, the HYPTEC HT delivers immense visual appeal alongside a comprehensive suite of premium and practical amenities. Crucially, it supports a high-voltage 800V charging architecture and delivers a maximum driving range of up to 620 km.

How long is the GAC AION electric vehicle warranty?
Currently, there are three authorized distributors/official dealerships in Hong Kong responsible for new vehicle sales and after-sales services: DangDang, APMG, and Kool Car. All three authorized distributors/official dealerships offer identical warranty terms for GAC AION electric vehicles:
Whole-Vehicle Warranty: 8 years / 160,000 km (whichever comes first)
Battery and Electric Motor Warranty: 8 years / 200,000 km (whichever comes first)
Regarding routine maintenance, each of the three distributors/official dealerships operates its own respective service center, depending on where you purchased your GAC AION electric vehicle. In terms of routine servicing, regular inspections are required every 10,000 km or every 12 months, whichever comes first, with the inspection fee starting from approximately HK$2,000+ per visit.
Essential Reading Before Purchasing a GAC AION Electric Vehicle: Motor Insurance Guide
If you are planning to purchase motor insurance for a GAC AION, models such as the AION Y Plus, V, UT, and ES are not classified as high-performance vehicles; they are primarily intended for standard family commuting. Consequently, their insurance premiums are comparable to those of conventional private passenger cars. However, it is important to note that GAC AION electric vehicles are equipped with surrounding sensors and cameras. Even in a minor collision, repair costs can be significantly higher than those of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, making comprehensive insurance (Full Coverage) a much safer and highly recommended choice.
Furthermore, as long as the policyholder meets the age and driving experience criteria, possesses a clean driving record, and holds a No Claim Discount (NCD), the premiums will be much more favorable. Conversely, certain premium models with higher retail prices, such as the HYPTEC HT, will carry higher premiums due to the larger insured value.
Do Emerging Mainland Electric Vehicle Brands Carry Higher Premiums?
Given that Mainland electric vehicles have been on the Hong Kong market for a relatively short period, insurance companies possess limited risk underwriting data regarding their real-world usage, accident rates, repair metrics, and replacement part costs. As a result, insurers perceive a higher underwriting risk compared to traditional gasoline vehicles, which naturally reflects in slightly higher premium baselines.
Comprehensive Insurance for Electric Vehicles
Comprehensive insurance for electric vehicles differs from gasoline vehicle policies not only in premium structures but also in coverage scope. Beyond basic comprehensive benefits—such as accidental own-damage coverage, new-for-old replacement compensation, and 24-hour complimentary towing services—electric vehicle comprehensive insurance explicitly integrates specialized protections. These include accidental damage coverage for private EV chargers, private EV charger replacement indemnity, and comprehensive coverage for internal electrical and electronic powertrain components.
In terms of pricing, premiums depend on multiple variables, including the policyholder's/driver's age, driving experience, occupation, historical driving record, and No Claim Discount. For illustration, based on a 46-year-old clerical professional with 5 years of driving experience, 0% NCD, and a 2026 production model AION V Premium, the comprehensive insurance premium is approximately HK$10,200. (Quote valid as of May 26, 2026)
