MG Electric Vehicles | MG MG5

With the rise of SUVs, the demand for station wagons is no longer what it used to be. However, for those seeking the driving feel of a four-door sedan while also requiring ample storage space, station wagons still hold a certain appeal. The MG5 currently on sale in Hong Kong is already in its second generation, featuring a brand-new grille and sharper, more angular body lines that give it a highly modern look. It is equipped with a 61 kWh battery, delivering 115 kW of horsepower and 280 Nm of torque, with a driving range of 400 km.

As a station wagon, storage space is naturally the primary concern. The MG5 has a trunk capacity of 578 liters, which can be expanded to 1,367 liters when the rear seats are folded down. With a cargo depth of up to 1,880 mm, it is even roomier than many SUVs, making it easy to accommodate multiple suitcases, golf bags, or even large items like bicycles. In terms of equipment, the center console features a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, a parking camera, climate control, leather seats, and a sunroof. Additionally, it comes with a rotary gear selector and the KERS three-stage kinetic energy recovery system.

MG Electric Vehicles|MG Cyberster

Since its debut, the MG Cyberster has generated a massive amount of buzz, primarily because a two-seater convertible electric sports car has not been seen on the market for a very long time (the first-generation Tesla Roadster dates all the way back to 2008). Designed primarily for the European market, the version sold in Hong Kong is also the European spec, available in both all-wheel-drive (AWD) and rear-wheel-drive (RWD) versions. Among them, the performance of the AWD version reaches astonishing supercar proportions, boasting 375 kW of horsepower and 725 Nm of torque, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, with a driving range of 443 km.

In terms of exterior styling, the pair of scissor doors is undoubtedly one of the vehicle’s main highlights, opening and closing at the push of a button for ultimate convenience and style. The soft-top convertible roof can be operated at speeds of 50 km/h or below, fully opening or closing in under 10 seconds. The interior materials and design are also highly sophisticated, featuring a pair of bucket seats wrapped in premium Nappa and Alcantara leather. In front of the driver’s seat sits a wrap-around triple-screen digital cluster. This setup not only allows the driver to view multiple sets of driving data simultaneously but also changes its display style in sync when switching driving modes. Coupled with the red "Super Sport" button on the flat-bottom steering wheel, it delivers a truly exhilarating and high-octane driving vibe.

MG Hybrid Vehicle | MS ZS HEV

With electric vehicles no longer enjoying tax incentives, MG has prepared a "two-pronged strategy" by introducing multiple hybrid models. In addition to the plug-in hybrid S9 PHEV, there is also the ZS HEV.

Equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine and a 100 kW motor, the ZS HEV differs from conventional hybrids by utilizing 8 different power combinations. For instance, it runs on pure electric power during slow city driving, receives motor-assisted power during acceleration to boost performance, and automatically manages power distribution when driving uphill. According to the manufacturer, the ZS HEV delivers a fuel consumption rate of 5.1 L / 100 km, making it highly suitable for Hong Kong car owners who face persistently high fuel prices.

The cabin design leans toward a traditional gasoline car, featuring physical buttons alongside a 12.3-inch widescreen central touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, it comes equipped with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a sunroof, USB ports, an electronic parking brake with Auto Hold, and a 360-degree camera.

MG Hybrid Vehicle|MG3 Hybrid+

As cars get bigger and bigger, small cars always feel easier for new drivers to manage. The MG 3 Hybrid+ is the manufacturer’s small car model in Hong Kong. At just 4,113 mm long, it significantly reduces the psychological stress for new drivers practicing or navigating Hong Kong's narrow parking garages.

Mechanically, the MG 3 Hybrid+ is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine and motor, paired with a 1.83 kWh battery, providing a combined 143 kW of power and 425 Nm of torque. The powerful torque makes starting and acceleration extremely responsive, doing 0-100 km in just 8 seconds, offering quicker reactions for new drivers when changing lanes or pulling out onto main roads. Thanks to the motor's power assistance and a 3-speed automatic transmission, it achieves an impressive fuel consumption of 4.4 L / 100 km, making it both small and fuel-efficient.

In addition to the Hybrid version, Hong Kong has also introduced the manual version of the MG 3, also featuring a 1.5-liter engine and a 5-speed manual transmission, offering 85 kW of power and 148 Nm of torque. For the niche market of manual cars in Hong Kong, it's rare to have another option.

Key Features of MG Models in Hong Kong

Since the Hong Kong government canceled the "One-for-One" tax concession scheme for electric private cars, EV prices have generally soared. However, MG Hong Kong was well-prepared, successively introducing various types of HEV and PHEV models, such as the S9 PHEV and ZS HEV. With their low fuel consumption performance, both models are highly suitable for Hong Kong drivers facing persistently high fuel prices.

In terms of electric vehicles, MG Hong Kong has also actively launched highly cost-effective models, such as the MG4 EV Urban, which was released at a starting price of under HK$200,000. Additionally, offering a wide range of vehicle types is another defining feature of MG. The lineup includes the M9 seven-seater MPV, the Cyberster convertible sports car, and the entry-level compact MG 3, catering to the diverse preferences of different drivers.

Must-Read Guide Before Buying an MG: Car Insurance Strategy

If you plan to purchase car insurance for an MG, whether it is an EV or a hybrid, the vehicle is equipped with sensors all around its body. Even for minor collisions, repair costs can be relatively high, so it is highly recommended to buy a comprehensive insurance policy (comprehensive cover) for better peace of mind.

Additionally, as long as the policyholder meets the age and driving experience requirements, possesses a clean driving record, and has a No Claim Discount (NCD) (if applicable), the premium is usually more reasonable. However, due to the high performance of the Cyberster, insurance companies are highly likely to classify it as a "high-performance vehicle," meaning premiums will be higher for drivers with younger ages or fewer years of driving experience.

As for the M9, many owners may employ drivers. Therefore, when buying car insurance, you need to pay close attention to the "Any Driver" or "Named Driver" clauses in the insurance policy, such as the deductibles (excess). At the same time, the M9 is a premium model with relatively extensive body configurations and interior equipment, which may require longer repair times; thus, it is advised to look out for the "courtesy car loss of use allowance" clause in the policy.

Are premiums for Chinese-made electric vehicles more expensive?

Given that Chinese-made electric vehicles have been on the Hong Kong market for a relatively short period, insurance companies face greater risks compared to traditional gasoline cars regarding relevant data—such as driving data, accident rates, repair data, and parts costs—which naturally results in higher premiums.

Comprehensive Insurance for EVs

Comprehensive insurance for EVs differs from that for gasoline cars not only in premiums but also in coverage details. Aside from basic comprehensive coverage items like own vehicle damage, new-for-old replacement compensation, and 24-hour free towing services, EV comprehensive insurance specifically adds coverage items such as accidental damage to private EV chargers, replacement of private EV chargers, and full coverage for internal electrical and electronic components.

In terms of premiums, it depends on multiple factors including the policyholder's/driver's age, driving experience, occupation, past driving records, and NCD. Taking a 36-year-old clerical worker with 5 years of driving experience and 0% NCD as an example, the comprehensive insurance premium for the MG S6 EV is approximately HK$17,366.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is special about the new MG Hybrid models?

MG's hybrid vehicles include hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models, which adjust their power output modes according to different road and driving conditions to significantly reduce fuel consumption. Among them, the ZS HEV and MG 3 Hybrid+ are HEVs, while the S9 PHEV is a plug-in hybrid with fuel consumption as low as 0.8 L / 100 km.

Which MG model offers the best value for money?

The MG 4 EV Urban is priced at around HK$200,000, equipped with a 53.9 kWh battery, and provides a range of 405 km (WLTP). The cabin features the hollowed-out central storage area and large touchscreen design common in mainstream EVs, and commendably, it still retains physical buttons for operating volume and fan speed. On the other hand, the MG 4 Trophy, which takes the route of a small hatchback, is equipped with a 64 kWh battery, provides a range of 450 km, and is priced at around HK$190,000.
